South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has stressed his intention to promote cooperation with Japan in various fields.

Lee spoke to domestic and foreign reporters at a New Year news conference held at the presidential office on Wednesday.

Referring to relations with Japan, Lee said confrontation by putting historical and territorial issues at the forefront might help unite domestic opinion, but ultimately would not serve the country’s interests.

The president said there are many constructive areas where the two countries can cooperate, and that these should be expanded as much as possible.

He said he must improve South Korea’s economic situation, and so he aims to focus on economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, because diplomacy plays a major role in improving people’s lives and the economy.

Lee met Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae last week in Nara City, western Japan.

He said he believes bilateral relations have improved significantly, including in terms of sentiment, thanks to Takaichi’s special consideration.

Lee also expressed willingness to restore the 2018 military agreement with North Korea, which was designed to ease inter-Korean tensions. The previous administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol fully suspended the agreement in 2024.

Lee said he wants to prevent accidental clashes between the South and the North and build political and military trust.
