From the article:
Trump used his time at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday to admonish Canada as leaders look to other world powers for a more coherent and consistent partnership.
“Canada gets lots of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful also, but they are not,” Trump said. “I watched your prime minister yesterday, he wasn’t grateful to us… Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Mark Carney said in his speech on Tuesday, “We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false – that the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. The trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigor depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.”
Carney continued, “We participated in the rituals, and we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality. This bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.”

What has been made clear with the moral and political collapse of the US is that the era of hegimonic super powers is over.
Democracies require intelligent well informed constituencies.
That does not exist in the US- making their manifestation of governance unpredictable and unstable.
They think that being rich white trash entitles them to global leadership.

1) I don’t believe he watched any of it since it wasn’t about him; and 2) Trump would be lost in Carney’s vocabulary.
As soon as the “sign in the window” analogy came up he’d be over his head.
Sign? What sign? I didn’t see a sign. Where’s our sign? I want a sign too! A bigglier sign the likes the world has never seen!

“Appear strong when you are weak. Appear weak when you are strong.”
Europe stands at a decisive turning point — shifting from being perceived as vulnerable despite its strength, to demonstrating unmistakable resolve at the very moment many assume it has none.
Now is the time to neither yield nor stand down.
Now is the time to rise to the magnitude of the moment.
Now is the time to show the true capacity of united nations — through diplomacy first and foremost, and through firm, lawful defensive measures should circumstances demand it.
Long live Europe. Long live the free world. Long live the nations that choose peace, dignity, and coexistence over fear and division.
Long live the North Atlantic Alliance — the bond that anchors democracies in collective defence and shared purpose.
And may those who betray their allies, undermine collective security, or act against the very alliance that safeguards them, face accountability, truth, and the full weight of justice in the times ahead.

This is the difference between Canada and the US. As much as our cultures overlap and we are also vulnerable to the moment, we are still in a much better place as a society than the US.
We’ve had our fair share of political polarization and the “Fuck Trudeau” crowd didn’t shut up for the last several years. I’m quite left-leaning and disliked Trudeau for different reasons but he was supremely unpopular by the end of his time in office.
However, when Trump came along this time last year and started all this tariff bullshit and 51st state talk, Canadians largely banded together and saw the situation for what it was. Trudeau did and said what we wanted him to and a lot of people begrudgingly acknowledged that he handled the situation well. It was nearly certain the Liberals would lose the next election, but Trudeau stepped aside and Carney took over. Then, the main challenger, Pierre Poilievre, couldn’t just do the easy thing and assure us that he’d stand up to Trump. His Conservative party lost the most sure-thing election I’ve ever observed in this country.
The Fuck Trudeau people have become Fuck Carney people and life goes on. However, they are a minority. There are very few Carney stans and there is no cult of personality around him (he would need a personality for that to be possible, but I digress). People rightly applaud Carney for this speech. Many still think he sucks on domestic issues. This is healthy.
In the US, there seems to be no room for nuance on anything. *Some* Trump supporters *might* express disapproval on certain things, but for the most part, you’re either a MAGA Republican or you’re a Dem/Lib/Socialist/Communist, whatever. You either drink the kool-aid on Greenland or are too stupid to understand Trump’s master plan and have TDS.
If a true threat to American sovereignty ever actually arose, I can’t fathom what that would look like and I have no idea how the US comes back from this.
