Croatia have missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 Men’s European Water Polo Championship after a 13–10 defeat to Italy in the third round of the second group phase.

The decisive match saw Croatia, coached by Ivica Tucak, fall short despite a competitive opening.

The teams were level at 3–3 after the first quarter, but Italy took control in the second period, shutting Croatia out to build a 5–3 lead at half-time.

Croatia responded strongly after the break, winning the third quarter 4–2 to reduce the deficit. However, Italy proved decisive in the final quarter, outscoring the Barakude 6–3 to seal the victory and secure their place in the semi-finals.

For Croatia, Luka Burić and Loren Fatović were the standout performers, each scoring three goals.

With the loss, Croatia finish outside the semi-final places and will now contest the match for fifth place against Spain on Thursday. Italy, meanwhile, advance to the semi-finals where they will face tournament hosts Serbia.

This result marks the second major tournament in succession where Croatia have failed to reach the podium.

While the disappointment of missing another semi-final will be keenly felt, Croatia will look to finish the tournament strongly against Spain as they aim to end their European Championship campaign on a positive note.
