    There are historical records, photographs from before 1950, and hell there were still plenty spots along the river from after 1950 where they removed sand and/or built on top of the sand..

    If you look along the river you will see a number of weirs to keep the water level up. A major reason for this is that when water levels get low a strong stench can be produced by decomposing organic matter.
