On the one hand, I think he is being unnecessarily harsh in this case (I think people underestimate the difficulty of spontaneously moving troops into arctic conditions that have not been trained to do so) but I share his frustration with Europe’s lack of decisiveness overall, though I think it is slowly coming around. Hopefully this statement helps push Europe to act more assertively.

When this kicked off, most of reddit was saying we can’t get involved, and we can’t set up the no-fly zone he asked for because it’ll escalate the conflict and Putin has nukes.

But deploying MORE troops to Greenland takes them away from being able to defend against Russia directly. Which is what they want.
So … you send a small force to Greenland as a matter of optics, knowing that most likely Trump is full of hot air (which, quel suprise, he was – and Z should know that better than most, frankly), or you fall into the trap and divide your forces.
Personally I think they made the right choice. But neither options was particularly good.
And above all of that is: I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT DEFENDING GREENALND AGAINST AN AMERICAN INVASION?!?!?!

What message would it have sent if Europe had sent hundreds or thousands of soldiers into an Arctic wasteland without proper planning and preparations, so that they just perish instantly?
I think very highly of Zelenskyy, but this is just populism without substance. There is a lot Europe can be criticized for, but this isn’t it.
