Greece believes there are currently legal reservations about joining the Peace Council, founded by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This was stated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ahead of an informal EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels.

Not only Greece, but all EU member states – except two – have expressed legitimate legal reservations, as this Peace Council, at least as proposed by the United States, substantially deviates from UN Resolution 2803

Nevertheless, the prime minister noted, Greece will invite all 13 EU member states asked to join the Peace Council to sign up to such accession, but only for the next phase of the peace process in Gaza and for as long as it is necessary.

“I think this is a fair compromise that will allow us to participate in the peace process in Gaza – Greece has from the very beginning shown strong interest in the region – but without creating a new organization that would be competitive with the UN,” Mitsotakis stressed.

The context of transatlantic relations remains tense: the prime minister stressed that today’s informal EU leaders’ summit was absolutely necessary due to the tensions surrounding Donald Trump’s latest remarks.

He also believes that today’s informal EU leaders’ summit was “absolutely necessary” due to the significant strain in transatlantic relations in recent weeks as a result of Donald Trump’s statements.

“However, I believe that his remarks yesterday will lead to de-escalation, at least regarding Greenland,” the Greek prime minister expressed.

He reminded that the EU, with one exception, fully backed Denmark, stressing that the Greenland issue concerns only its inhabitants.

We recognize that the United States has serious and well-founded concerns about Arctic security, but they can be resolved in good faith and in accordance with the existing treaties between Denmark and the United States. I believe we can move forward productively and constructively in that direction

According to sources, on January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Donald Trump announced the launch of the Peace Council and stated that the world is richer, safer, and more peaceful than the previous year.

Greece’s explanation highlights the need for a cautious approach and thoughtful participation in the peace process without creating a new structure that could compete with the UN.
