Knows we were never really going to pay the bribe, especially considering the company we would be keeping. I doubt this was ever for us anyway, just a quick buck from despots and whoever else is feeling squeamish.

Saves Carney the trouble of having to decline it and deal with tariff threats or whatever like Macron did.
And you don’t get to have the wonderful company of Putin and Orban, I guess

Good.
I don’t *think* Carney would have accepted the invite anyway, but better not to contribute a billion dollars to the Donald J. Trump Self-Esteem Fund for Narcissists.

Good. Guess he didn’t take too kindly to Carney being the center of attention at WEF.
It’s like if the Hamburglar was to invite you to a Stop Eating Hamburgers Board, and try to charge $100 to get in. Like of course we aren’t going to join, he’s just going to use the money to buy more hamburgers.

Yeah you do not need a billion dollar buy in if you are there for peace

Let us hope that this is Trump’s idea of “punishing” Canada over the speech, because frankly it is a gift. He defused the political minefield of Carney having to politely decline the invitation without causing retaliation. Regardless, there was no way Carney was going to join this organization after the speech he gave at the WEF. The optics of standing next to Lukashenko and Orban are very poor, and that’s not even counting the inevitable political fallout when this organization does something evil.

Only autocrats and small nations fearful of US reprisal were ever going to fall for this “give me a billion to join a random club” grift.

I’m very glad to not even be in the discussion for the Gaza Beach front property development plan. In my opinion it’s all of Harper and CPC’s fault for the reputation hit we took for Gaza. They moved us from a neutral stance on Israel to allying with them. That allyship put us in a negative light

Carney likely gave Trump a heads-up he would decline the invitation to be a member, to give Trump an opportunity to do what he just did. Much less embarrassing for Trump than Carney refusing publicly the invitation. No need for Carney to embarrass Trump more than what he already did in Davos. So I think it’s Carney acting as a gentleman behind the scene.

Guys, we may have to give Trump that thing where we build a border wall and pay for it.
If someone starts a Go Fund Me for it, include a link on where I can sell a kidney.

This is one of those “oh no! anyways” meme reactions. Carney probably felt weird about accepting the invite anyways.

Read the rules of the ‘Bored of Peas’. No sane country will join. It literally names Trump directly as leader. Says he gets to pick the leading committee himself. Says he can only be removed by a unanimous vote of the people he picks. Also says he can replace them any time.

This is elementary school level drama. The world is being taken apart by a man with the intellect of a child. Coincidentally said man also has *other* interests involving children.

Wouldn’t be surprised Carney said no and he rushed to say he’s withdrawing the invitation. That’s what this feels like.

The board will be a joke anyways, it reminds me of a joke – “we have a total democracy here, when we disagree, you go with me; when we agree, I go with you”.

Prime Minister Carney had no intention of joining this so called Board of Peace. Every dollar Frumpy gets goes straight into his pocket. The only President to make money, reports have said that he has made at least one billion dollars since he started his second term.

This is probably the best outcome for Carney.
1) The government does not have to pay $1b
2) he doesn’t have to decline the offer and be met with a 200% tarriff, like what Trump threatened Macron
3) He doesn’t have to justify to Canadians why he is not on the Board.

Just more broadly – this has to be the best week for Carney politically in months, if not since the election. The opposition is in a pretty tough spot. Carney’s had the chance to show off his competency/leadership skills for Canadians while, at the same time, Trump’s reminding us why such skills are what they are looking for in a leader right now.

I’m guessing it is a relief to most Canadians, but it could also signal the beginning of open hostility.
