The GNR Coastal and Border Control Unit seized more than 1,200 kilos of crustaceans and bivalves, worth €8,500, in Murtosa, in the district of Aveiro, on Saturday and Sunday, the security force reported.

In a statement, the GNR clarified that the seizure took place as part of several inspections conducted in the vicinity of the Aveiro estuary, aimed at enforcing the rules governing the capture, transport, and storage of live crustaceans and bivalve molluscs.

“Following the inspections, two men aged 54 and 43 were identified, who were transporting the cargo without the necessary and mandatory documentation. It should be noted that the infringed rules constitute administrative offences punishable by a fine of up to €25,000,” the same note states.

The GNR also states that, following the operation, crustaceans and bivalves worth an estimated €8,500 were seized, namely 675 kilograms of Moorish crab and 580 kilograms of common cockle.

The seized crab and bivalves were sent to the Aveiro fish market to be weighed and measured, and were later returned to their natural habitat.
