Flu cases ease slightly but remain elevated across Greece

[Intime News]

Greece has seen a modest decrease in flu-related doctor visits and hospitalizations over the past week, though influenza circulation remains at elevated levels.

Health authorities continue urging vigilance, particularly among high-risk populations.

According to the latest Weekly Epidemiological Surveillance Report for Respiratory Infections, 12.5% of doctor visits involved respiratory infection symptoms last week, down from over 16% in early January. Of those cases, 44% tested positive for influenza, compared to more than 50% earlier this month.

Hospital admissions dropped to 613 new cases from 871 the previous week, marking the first decline after seven weeks of surge. However, 23 new severe cases requiring ICU admission and seven deaths were reported last week.

Most severe cases involve unvaccinated individuals with underlying conditions.

The dominant strain is Influenza A, particularly the H3N2 subtype’s highly transmissible K subclade.

Experts note flu activity typically continues through March with periodic surges.
