The Missouri Public Service Commission is urging Missouri energy customers to practice energy conservation measures during Winter Storm Fern. The electric grid is putting a strain on the electric grid due to the frigid temperatures, snow, and ice. Missouri is served by two regional grid operators who keep communication with the Missouri Public Service Commission. Those regional grid operators are the Midcontinent Independent System Operator and the Southwest Power Pool. The grid operators monitor the electric grid in their territories and work with associated members about what is necessary to maintain the grid’s reliability.
The regional grid operators may ask member utilities to encourage the reduction of energy consumption. Lamoni Municipal Utilities has already urged its energy customers to take steps to reduce their energy consumption.
Measures which can be taken to conserve electricity include lowering the thermostat. It is suggested to wear additional layers of clothing and use blankets to stay comfortable. Windows should be covered which allow cold air to come in. Blankets and towels can be placed where openings around seen under or around doors. Appliances or devices which are not essential can be unplugged. The temperature setting on electric water heaters can be lowered. Furnace filters should also be cleaned for full efficiency.
