SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said on Saturday that Minnesota political leaders and law enforcement need to de-escalate the violence, rhetoric, and tension in the state.

Jackley said South Dakota has protocols when dealing with officer-involved shootings, and has steps laid out if it involves federal law enforcement as well. That involves transparency, preserving the crime scene, and providing timelines about the investigation.

He said it’s a multi-agency effort at the local, state, and, if needed, federal level, and he said more of that is needed across the state border.

“We’re lucky here in South Dakota. We have law-abiding citizens. When these situations do happen, I think it’s a concerted effort by local, state, and in some instances, federal law enforcement and political leaders to say, ‘Let us do our jobs. We’ll be transparent about it. We’ll let you know what we find, and we’ll be open about it.’ That goes a long way, and I think it better protects the public,” Jackley said.

Jackley said that de-escalation is what’s needed most right now, and federal leaders and officials in Minnesota need to come to the table.
