  1. Why does it not mention the five million cost to rerun the mayoralship that he hasn’t finished his term of or the fact he lost that last leadership election? Far better Burnham is used for the next general election to fight off reform

Understandable that there are some fears that seat may be lost to reform but you have to face two difficult situations

  2. Out of power for 12-odd years, back in for barely two and already imploding.

Why is the left wing in this country so pitiful. Who are we supposed to vote for?!

Can we go 1 week without a Labour own goal pleaseeee.

Have no animosity towards Starmer but this feels like self preservation as he undoubtedly would’ve been a leader in waiting.

  4. LegitimateCompote377 on

Wow, Starmer must be really vulnerable now. If they lose the seat to Reform or the Greens it will really show their weakness, but I still feel he will hold until the Welsh and Scottish elections, then he will probably feel like there will be no other choice but to resign. This was a bad mistake aimed at self preservation (including keeping the mayorship of Manchester) that will bite Starmer in the back.

  5. Those of us who were in the left of the Labour Party around 2019-2024 know full well the conniving Machiavellian freaks who dominate the party machinery. They have no morals.

I wouldn’t mind so much if they actually used their dishonourable talents to occasionally achieve something good but their entire existence seems to revolve around ensuring they face no accountability from the Left so they can drag the party even further to the right in the hope of personal gain (peerage, board positions etc).

And before anyone says they do it to win elections, how do you think the next GE is going to play out for Labour?

  6. As was always going to happen, given Starmer and his masters are such despicable weak cowards. This will only strengthen resolve to get rid of the parasites.

  7. I_love_running_89 on

    Oh grow up, Labour Party.

The world and UK has bigger problems to face than your egos and infighting.

You’re going to lose the next election with this.

  8. Jesus. This is where we are now – the country’s hopes are pinned on this spectacular, gladiatorial contest between *Kier Starmer* and *Andy Burnam*.

  9. Fuck sake. Starmer is clinging onto power in desperation and will bring the country down with him by opening the door for Farage.

  10. Pure opportunism only 1.5 years into the term. I’m glad he’s been blocked. Whatever happens next happens, but I don’t approve of Burnham riding in with no justification thinking he can just slot in as PM.

Ditching your leader once they’re PM because you’re scared of polls after 1.5 years is absolutely pathetic, destabilising behaviour btw.

If Labour lose the seat now, it will intensify challenges to Starmer. Now the attacks will be “Burnham could’ve won that.”

The best case scenario for Starmer would’ve been to let Burnham stand and lose the by-election. That would’ve killed off his leadership challenge entirely.

Bring on the Nigel. Let’s be brutally honest, that’s the only outcome anybody wanted from this right, so they can taste the true poverty and deprivation that they voted for from a Richard Tice Emergency Budget or am I being uncharitable?

  13. Reverend_Vader on

I wonder if that panel realised their decision damaged starmer

More than putting him through ever would

Well doesn’t this just scream “strength” from the Labour party. A man who voted for the Iraq war and against investigations into it, who voted against increased regulation on gambling companies and for ID cards / mass surveillance is now too left wing for Keir Starmer’s party. They’ll be lucky to have 100 MPs left after the next election… because of shit like this.

  15. Impressive-Bird-6085 on

When will Labour’s leadership ever learn??

This is an open goal for Reform UK and the Conservatives….

If Labour carries on like this, with more of these underhand shenanigans and cleaving more to the right, then I’ll be well and truly done with voting Labour. Ever again!

  16. Labour cancelling local elections is a terrible look. When democracy is shelved, even temporarily, peaceful protest should be the default response. The reasons feel too obvious lately and too many senior figures at risk of losing their seats/power

I see kier starmer as an increasingly authoritarian leader. He tolerates little internal opposition, centralises control, and now we’re seeing democratic processes quietly shelved when they become inconvenient. That should worry people, regardless of party.

  17. I didn’t like Johnson doubling up jobs, not a fan of Burnham doing it either.

Do need Labour to just actually stop petty infighting though, they’re doing a good job but the optics just come across so lacklustre.

  18. Christ. Like it or lump it, but Starmer is eventually gonna go (even if it was decades from now). It’d be to Labour’s benefit to have someone around who could take over.

For all the right of the party love to bang on about how the way New Labour did things is the only possible path of success, they’re turning a strong blind eye to how Brown was in the wings throughout Blair’s leadership.

  19. I agree with Starmer. This guy’s coming in to take him on. That’s the last thing we need right now. Starmers elected to be prime minister and do a job and he’s doing it very well. The last thing he needs is somebody coming in thinking he’ll steal his job. I’m blaming him at all. This is not the time for Burnham to seek his glory.

  20. Front-Brick-3724 on

Starmer did well with the trump Afghanistan comments, and then royally fucks himself with this.
He’s a one term prime minister.

  21. The economy seems to be doing better, Starmer seems to be doing well forming relationships with Europe, Canada etc and holding Trump at bay whilst global instability increases and there’s the economic threat that a US civil war and even WW3 will cause (to those who think the US is a distant land, the effect on the economy will ripple and ripple badly). But yes, let’s have some political infighting, because none of that matters. People’s political careers over the publics needs, we love an own goal in the uk.

  22. I supported labour and couldn’t wait for the grown ups to take power. It’s been an absolute shambles though. Every single decision has been a disaster. My mother in law constantly adds “Bloody Starmer” with the right wing headline to every family occasion and I always try to highlight the good stuff the governments doing but he’s making it impossible to defend them. I feel like saying it! I thought he was supposed to care about the country more than himself.

  23. Starmers problem has always been and will always be he has absolutely no Chrisma.

He is awful at Public Speaking, has all the Chrisma of Baige Wallpaper and is aspiring as a tin of carrots.

It doesn’t matter what Labour does if nobody pays any attention.

20 years ago Starmer might have done well as a leader but in Today’s age he is completely ineffective.

No matter what Starmer does or says he will always be ineffective as nobody is paying any attention to him and Labour will be utterly torn apart come the next election because whether you like or not, a Leader needs to be able to cut through all the noise and make people stand up and listen to them and Starmer will never be able to do this.

You Put Starmer, Fararge, Zak and whoever the Tories put up on stage Starmer will get wrecked.

  24. Can someone with more knowledge explain why they are blocking him?
Is it because Starmer sees him as a leadership threat or something else?

  25. I understand everyone’s love of Amateur Dramatics… but can we stop showing the media abed social needs to  turn the serious job of government into a soap opera in the interest of not going out of business…

  26. pppppppppppppppppd on

This will leave a sour taste in the mouths of many across the political spectrum. ‘Cost of a Manchester mayoral election’ – hogwash.

Suspect Labour will come to deeply regret this move.

  27. GeekyGamer2022 on

Starmer just stumbles from self-made crisis to self-made crisis.
    He’s an absolute fucking idiot.

  28. If Burnham resigns the Mayoralty, Reform will win. That should be his and the Labour party’s concern.

Plus the LOL at thinking he is the answer to that party’s current problems. Like he is the King across the water.

Labour needs to stop the self hating and start getting behind their leadership. Factionalism kills governments – Not lack of socialist ideals.

(I am not a Labour voter)
