I didn’t even know they were allowed to do this?

  1. Might be the latest change to get the waiting lists down. Waiting years to be seen to while constantly getting reconfirmation letters trying to boot ye off the list by missing one wasn’t working out for then I guess.

I had a dermatologist referral and I called the hospital to ask when I might get an appointment and they told me 18 months is the current wait time.

It took me ten years to even get registered with a doctor in Ireland.

The NHS is something I miss the most. I know its going to get criticism but honestly its not as bad as what the media makes it out to be.

Meanwhile in Ireland if I phone for an ambulance its like phoning for a pizza. I’ve friends that have had to literally drive their family to the hospital because they were told that they’ll ring back?!?

Never ever let your GP send referrals on your behalf.

Get it in writing, scan it and send it to any and all consultant until one of them replies you can go.

This whole idea you need to get a referral is ridicolous to see a consultant, in particular when you already know what you have is total nonsense.

  5. ‘To Whom it may concern’? is odd no? They’d have the OP’s name along with their address in order to send the letter so Dear Mr/Mrs etc would be more appropriate surely?

Anyway I know 2 people referred to a dermatologist last year and both seen with in a few months. Really seems to come down to where you live for certain things now.

I was trying to get a consultant appointment for a minor but ongoing issue recently. I have health insurance and was going private. I assumed that I’d be seen within a month or so.

My first issue was getting a GP referral. My GP retired last year. I rang every GP within an hour of where I live and nobody would see me. I ended up going with the VHI video consultation to get a referral letter.

The first consultant told me straight up that they can’t see me, the second one put me on a waiting list with no indication of when an appointment might be available, and the third one I contacted said that the current lead time for a consultation is 11 months but I could be put on a cancellation list if I want.

I have had no reason to go to a doctor or consultant in some time thankfully, this was a rude awakening about the state of our health service.

  7. Yes they can. What do you expect if that consultant has no capacity. You need to go back to your GP and identify another consultant. This is common to most healthcare systems.

So awful. Webdoctor.ie have new dermatology specialising GPs if it was anything they might able to help with. I had them check a mole for me and at the same time I ended up being diagnosed with rosacea which I literally never knew I had! And was the same fee as their normal GP consultations I think. The woman I saw was really lovely!

If you pay it out of your own pocket, it’s probably much faster. Also it’s so ancient that they still send mails over this. Emails are much faster and easier to handle (much easier to look for it in the future etc).

Your doctor just needs to refer you to a different Derm. Was same with me for a Psych appt, so she kept referring me and kept getting knock backs. I had to go private in the end.

I’ve been waiting three years for a dermatology appointment been told it might be another year country is a joke

  12. Dermatology is the worst for this in my experience, took me 5 years to get an appointment

  13. In my case the GP got on a call with Beaumont Hospital and pushed for a quicker appointment since my condition was extreme. It took me about 7-8 months to get to the consultant since the first GP appointment.

  14. Not a single bigger medical thing required by my wife, me, or our 2 kids, was done through public healthcare system. Waiting times of multiple years are insane, even for rather crucial medical situations.

I’ve done critical nose septum surgery, younger kid did kidney surgery, big kid did wound stitches and broken arm, wife did lots of post-birth stuff (not to go into details), all of it mostly in Beacon. For any of those surgeries, especially for my kid’s kidney, if we waited for years for the procedure, shit would be hitting the fan at high velocities. My kid could have lost a kidney.

I don’t understand why do we even pretend we have functional healthcare system.
