Some say it’s because the polar bears (which never go south of the equator) have eaten them all.
Fun fact: The most northerly species of penguin is the Galápagos penguin *Spheniscus mendiculus*, native to the Galápagos Islands situated off Ecuador. OK, yes the islands do extend to 1½° north but the penguins don’t go any further.
