Beethoven’s legacy: the 19th-century violin virtuoso
On January 29, the Jesuits’ Church Foundation is dedicating an evening to Beethoven, one of the most well-known names in Western classical music and one of the most influential composers of all time.
The recital, featuring Stefan Calleja (violin) and Stephanie Quintano (piano), will feature also include works by Kreisler, Clara Schumann and Ysäye. Each composer took the Romantic idiom in a new direction, from the intense lyricism of Clara Schumann to the virtuoso writing of Kreisler and Ysäye.
The event starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is free, but donations are welcome.
Nordic Resonance
Maltese sound artist and percussionist Renzo Spiteri and Scottish flautist Richard Craig are bringing an immersive sound performance to Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta on January 30 at 8pm.
The performance is inspired by the Shetland Islands, which are distinguished by a landscape of natural magnificence, bird calls, whale song, the force of the wind, and the ever-changing moods of the coastline and the sea.
Developed through deep listening to these elemental soundscapes and extended engagement with the Shetland environment, Nordic Resonance explores how sound can carry the presence of landscape beyond its place of origin.
Spiteri and Craig thus bring the atmosphere of this northern landscape into the performance space, inviting audiences to slow down and listen closely.
The performance will be followed by an artist talk/Q&A session with the musicians, moderated by artist, curator and academic Vince Briffa.
Nordic Resonance is presented as part of Spazju Kreattiv 2025-26 programme, with repeat performances in Shetland and Glasgow.
Tickets from spazjukreattiv.org.
Classical Reflections: Paisiello, Mozart & Schubert
Acclaimed conductor Wolfram Christ leads the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in a journey through classical elegance and charm at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta on January 30 at 7.30pm.
Paisiello’s sprightly overture to Il Barbiere di Siviglia sets the stage for Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, a masterpiece of lyrical warmth and sublime grace, performed by Alessandro Carbonare, principal clarinettist of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra.
Nicknamed the “Little C-Major”, Schubert’s Symphony No. 6 follows with its energy and melodic brilliance, seamlessly blending the classical form with the emerging warmth and expressiveness of the Romantic era.
