    Oliver Ekman-Larsson raves with gratitude about opportunity to represent Sweden at 2026 Winter Olympics

    Toronto Maple Leafs veteran defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been an iron man for the Maple Leafs in 2025-26, on pace for what could be a career year offensively and being one of only two players, along with John Tavares, to play in every game. He had a couple of injury scares throughout the year, but found a way to heal up and be ready to go the next night. His reward for all of this? An opportunity to represent Team Sweden at the 2026 Winter Olympic games, perhaps for the last time of his career.

    While Ekman-Larsson acknowledged his strong play in 2025-26, he made sure to tip his cap to his teammates for helping him crack the roster.

    “My teammates, myself gave me the best chance to be on that team,” Ekman-Larsson said. “So, I’m very thankful for that.”

    The 34-year-old raved about the team’s talent and said that he believes they have what it takes to succeed at the tournament.

    “I think we always have a good chance to do something special,” Ekman-Larsson continued. “I know all the guys that wear that yellow and blue shirt want to do good. I think everybody knows what we expect out of each other, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to go over there and play with those guys.”

    Ekman-Larsson was asked what he remembers from the 2006 Olympic-gold winning Sweden team, and reflected on the joy he had watching his country take home the top prize.

    “I think that’s one memory I have as a young kid, I was so happy I cried. Obviously what that team and those players meant for hockey in Sweden, that’s very special. So, that’s something in my mind that I always kind of reflect on. I grew up idolizing those guys and watching them play.”

    The Olympics kick off with the opening ceremony taking place on February 6, and while Ekman-Larsson won’t have the benefit of rest that some players will, he’s taking everything in stride and expressing gratitude for an opportunity to represent his home country, and one that may not have happened without his success in 2025-26.
