Hi everyone! I’m Armenian, and I’m really curious to know how our language sounds to you guys. How would you describe its qualities and sound patterns? What characteristics does it have? Would you say it sounds like Georgian in any way?
Personally speaking, Georgian sometimes sounds like Armenian to me. It sounds like Armenian but with different words, like I’m supposed to understand it but can’t. There’s been times where I’ve heard it passively and it sounds really familiar, but a few seconds later I realize it’s actually not my language. The individual sounds, intonation, and certain syllables are eerily similar. We both have many words ending in -is, -es, -as, -isa, -its, -eli, -ali, -av, -en, and so on. Georgian words like "it was" and "pekhburtits" sound like they could be Armenian, and Armenian words like "Sarsapali" and "davach’anetsi" sound like they could be Georgian. And indeed there is a fair amount of shared vocab between the two: nush(i), artsiv(i), karak(i), etc. I also feel like Georgian and Armenian originate in the same place in the throat. Yes they’re not exactly the same, but something about the intonation and the accent feels very similar to me. Listen to Georgians and Armenians speak each other’s language; the accents will be very close.
For me they’re like alternate universe versions of each other—almost identical sounds, similar rhythmic patterns, but completely different vocabulary and grammar. Do you think they sound similar at all? I’ll leave links of audiobooks in each language in case anyone wants to listen. Thanks!!
