Hi this is Jorge Barrera, CBC’s Mexico correspondent, with initial reaction from Mexico to Ryan Wedding’s first court appearance.
A Mexican senator with an opposition political party says she hopes that Canada was not left out of the loop during the events that led Ryan Wedding into the hands of U.S. authorities. Â
Sen. Claudia Anaya, with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), says that, if it’s true that Wedding was apprehended on Mexican soil, as his lawyer now says, the Mexican government should have notified the Canadian embassy.Â
“If the authorities detained him, they should have notified the Canadian embassy to see if this citizen had a crime to answer for in his own country,” said Anaya.Â
“He also had a right to consular assistance.”
Wedding is also wanted by the RCMP. Global Affairs Canada said it could not immediately respond to a request for comment.
