  1. Good! Would be nice to have at home too. Social Media has turned into the biggest issue by far at the local middle school.

  2. Has France stated how it will be implemented/controlled? I expect Canada will make the announcement next after he meets Albo in the march aus trip

Maybe this is controversial, but good.

Sure, you can make the argument that it keeps them blind from things happening in the world. But it also stunts the Influence of douches purposefully trying to use them.

  4. That’s certainly not a bad thing, but how do they plan of enforcing such a thing?

On one hand, I do believe social media is filled with misinformation meant to polarize people. But on the other hand, it’s very difficult to enforce. If you look at Australia, children claimed to be under 16 and flooded the country’s social media feeds with messages gloating lol

  6. It’s a good idea but the age should probably be 18 like all the other age based restrictions.

This is gonna get interesting considering the French tend to launch a revolution when a train is 30 seconds late, let alone this. Also social media bans do quite a bit of harm because they isolate at risk youth without trusted adults.

  8. Stupid idea. The first problem is defining what “social media” means. There is no easy definition.

But anyhow, the effect here in Australia on the great majority of users of the allowed age has been minimal. The companies use AI models to assess the age of users based on history without having to scan faces or id, and this is surprisingly accurate. I still think it was a bad idea.

  9. There is one hack of a major online french public service every day and they will want people to upload their ID what could go wrong. Also once the system is in place the control will just get tougher in the future. No link with the upcoming election I’m sure.

Can’t teens just use their allowance money to subscribe to a VPN? What about households in France that have their entire home network on a VPN?

I’m genuinely thankful social media (and especially predatory algorithms) wasn’t really a thing when I was fifteen.
Back then you could be cringe in peace, disappear for a bit, and grow without having your worst phase archived, optimised, and monetised.

  12. We’ve barely seen the results of this from Australia, and now France and the UK are joining in lol. The sad thing is – they’ll never reverse it. Even if research comes out later showing it didn’t do much good, they’ll just say ‘oh well’ and leave it banned. Since it doesn’t lead to mass protests – children are the most politically repressed and unrepresented part of the population everywhere, all decisions regarding them aren’t based on their preferences – they’ll just leave it

In practice all this does is force those who weren’t already savvy, to become more savvy with their devices to circumvent this. And some of them will mess up, or deliberately seek out the seedier side of the web. Like you don’t NEED the TOR browser to bypass this, but it is an option. And it opens up ‘other’ parts of the web too. Meanwhile the unlucky will just download malware. It’s much like banning or even waging ‘war’ on drugs – the drugs always win.

Who loses? The unlucky kids, and ALL the adults. Never the politicians tho.
