Something that really strikes me about this case is that one of the Gardai, objecting to bail (which was granted), pointed out the maximum sentence is 10 years.

If you want to kill someone in this country, running them over with a vehicle seems to carry a lot less penalty than other methods.

    >[Garda McDaniel] said he was objecting to bail given the seriousness of the offence and a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

  2. That article was just edited thats so strange. I just read it and it said something like:
“Mr Lee’s attorney has said he has dyslexia and ADHD and…”,
I was about to point out the ridiculousness of it.

Killed a child on Sunday. Sleeping in his own bed on Tuesday.

Something is seriously wrong with our justice system.

  4. Grand so nothing is going to change basically. That poor family’s lives have been changed forever.

    > Judge Áine Clancy granted him bail with a number of conditions.

    > The teenager cannot drive mechanically propelling vehicles including a car or any kind of scrambler or scooter.

    > He must provide a mobile phone number, sign on three times a week, surrender his passport, reside with his mother and abide by a curfew between 11pm and 6am.

Yeah I’m sure he’s going to abide those terms. Nothing wrong with this at all.

  6. The way the courts treat killing people versus killing people with a car will never make sense to me.

I live not to far from here and remember there used to be absolutely loads of dirt bike scramblers everywhere. On Christmas, I think it was about 5 years ago the Garda turned up and confiscated a heap of them, literally the day after Christmas a bunch of them taken off lads.

Things calmed down a load after that but it’s come back big time with the larger e-scooters/e-bikes.

Although this really isn’t the right term for them, it’s the ones that are more like electric motorbikes that are the real trouble

    10 years?

    Released on bail?

What in the fuck is that?

We need a full overthrow of our shite judicial system.

    I’m in shock.

  9. So when are the riots for the safety of our women and children gonna be organised? Oh wait-

  10. I wonder how many times he had been reckless on a scrambler before this.

‘He said Mr Lee had been cooperative, gave a “full and frank” interview and showed remorse about what happened.

He accepted the vehicle “shouldn’t have been on the road” but it was “an accident.”

Mr Kenny said his client suffered from ADHD and had been given medication while in custody. He was on disability allowance and worked part time.

He had no prior convictions, had never been in a court before and there was “nothing to suggest he will abscond,” Mr Kenny said.

While the evidence was “overwhelming,” that should not be held against Mr Lee in a bail application, Mr Kenny said. He made admissions because he “felt it was the right thing to do and he didn’t want to put the family through any unnecessary grief.”

Judge Clancy said the “sudden and tragic loss of life of Grace Lynch” was of the “utmost seriousness” but Mr Lee was presumed innocent.’

  11. What the fuck does ADHD and dyslexia got to do with this??? The cunt went on the bike, broke a red light and killed someone. I’ve ADHD and dyslexia, work full time and struggle to the best of them. It never occurred to me to get on a bike, no helmet, run a red light and kill someone. Can this stop being used an excuse!! A disorder is not an excuse to be a scumbag.

Kill a child. Get bail. What kind of society do you expect to end up getting when you allow this?

  13. I said it on a different thread a few days back but a good shoe up the hole would stop a lot of these things from happening before they start. The scrambler/quad/escooter/ebike thing has gotten way out of hand. Now a 16 year old girl is dead. The driver is to blame but the inaction on the problem is also to blame

More details in the Dublin Kuce article, but can’t share here.

*Solicitor for Mr Lee, Wayne Kenny, told the court that he did not want “empathy” and said his client was caught red-handed, as the Garda had outlined. The Garda agreed with the solicitor, however, that Mr Lee had no previous convictions, no history of bench warrants and had no previous matters before the courts.*

    Surprised at that.

  15. If he gets the full 10yrs he’ll likely be out years before that right? I’d happily see him do 20+ for what he did.

Frankly, it was only a matter of time. I used to live in the area years ago and the absolute menace that these young little scrotes inflict on the people living in the area is abysmal. Every Christmas all you can hear, first thing Christmas morning, is all the young fellas rallying up and down Rathoath Road because they’ve been given scramblers — as fuckin Christmas presents, for fuck sake.

The amount of times I’ve heard stories of near misses or “the lads” poppin’ wheelies next to cars and nearly making them crash is insane– sure me poor ma only had something like that happen to her a few months back.

But of course the gardai will do nothing. Finglas South (Berryfield, Kippure, Valeview, etc) are a fuckin warzone as far as they’re concerned and they just turn a blind eye. I’m glad I got out.

Bless. Poor girl was just crossing the road and now her whole family’s life is changed forever.

Friendly reminder that he hasn’t entered a plea and enjoys the presumption of innocence throughout the trial. And comments online suggesting otherwise can get trials collapsed.

  18. Shoddy-Conflict-338 on

Too many people with Neurodevelopmental disorders causing hassle in society and you want to be “included”

    Ridiculous

  19. Infuriating. What more needs to happen before there is an overhaul in how youth crime is addressed by the legal system??

This country is an absolute failure in criminal justice. “Up to 10 years” for robbing a person of their life. Getting to sleep at home in your bed while awaiting trial for killing a girl who will never see her home or family again. We wonder why anti-social behaviour is so invasive in this country when we can’t even deal with killers in a sensible manner, let alone find justice in the cases. Embarrassing doesn’t even begin to tell the full story.

I wonder whether his mother’s is the best place for him. She was presumably involved in enabling the scrambler purchase etc.

  22. >The court heard Mr Lee is a mechanic who has ADHD and dyslexia and lives with his mother following the death of his father a few years ago.

I’m not sure how that bears any relevance here. ADHD/Dyslexia aren’t mitigating factors in someone killing another person.

  23. 10 years is an absolute joke. Sentences should be a punishment but also a deterrent to future offenders.

  24. Complex_Spare_7278 on

It is a well known fact in most countries that if you want to kill someone and get away with it you simply need to drive over them in such a way that it is not undeniable that you wanted to drive over them.
