Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia has described a new publication by Malta Employers on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as a serious, balanced and well-documented contribution to public discussion.

Addressing the launch of the publication, Farrugia said the document reflects an extensive process of consultation, reflection and discussion, resulting in an approach that is measured and evidence-based. He noted that the publication tackles themes of particular relevance to Malta, including good governance, the social dimension of work and the economy, institutional responsibility, and the need for long-term sustainable development.

The Speaker emphasised that the value of the publication lies in the way these issues are presented not as abstract concepts, but as areas requiring continuous reflection and evaluation in light of the national interest and the common good. While clarifying that his role is not one of implementation, Farrugia expressed the hope that the contribution would receive due attention and consideration from the competent institutions, as and when appropriate.

Speaking briefly at the event, Malta Employers Director General Kevin J. Borg said that the majority of employers today view ESG as an integral part of business strategy rather than merely a compliance exercise. He underlined the importance of governance, leadership and strategic direction, as well as the need for decision-making to be supported by reliable data.

Malta Employers President Ivan Refalo echoed these remarks, stating that the employer community is sending a clear message that ESG can be most effective when it is fully embedded in organisational planning and management structures.
