Tragedy strikes Greek soccer fans in Romania

Firefighters and police officers stand near the vehicles involved in a road accident with a minibus carrying PAOK soccer fans, in Romania on Tuesday.

Seven people were killed and three injured in a multi-vehicle crash shortly after 1 p.m. near Timisoara, Romania, on Tuesday. Most of the victims were under 30 and were traveling from Greece to France to attend Thursday’s Europa League match between PAOK and Lyon.

Their black minivan crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a passing truck in a head-on collision. Four vehicles were involved: the minivan, a truck, a tanker carrying alcohol, and a passenger car.

The route, through Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, is commonly used by PAOK supporters to avoid long waits at non-EU borders.

Video shows the van overtaking the tanker, signaling right, swerving, signaling left again and colliding violently with the truck. The stretch is known locally as a “road of death,” narrow, undivided and lacking barriers.

Authorities are investigating the cause, including possible medical issues or distraction, Romanian experts said after reviewing video.
