
Researchers at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have observed that handwashing synthetic fabrics in water with higher total dissolved solids (TDS) leads to more microplastic fibres (MPF) being released.

This really drives home that microplastics aren’t an “individual responsibility” problem anymore. Even normal, unavoidable activities can cause harm at scale. Feels like this only gets solved upstream with materials standards and regulation. Like that’s going to happen though..
So if you wash synthetics in dirty water they shed more micro particles. Fair enough
