As food systems come under increased pressure to deliver more nutritious food with fewer resources, a new white paper by Food Nation explores how Denmark is addressing these challenges through its ingredient and biosolutions ecosystem.
Titled Ingredients and Biosolutions – Smart Danish solutions for sustainable food systems and global food security, the paper presents a variety of Danish products and solutions. They range from functional food and feed ingredients to biosolutions, including bio-based technologies that apply biology directly in farming and food processing.
According to the report, Danish companies and research institutions are using circular principles to create new value from agricultural side streams and underutilised biomass. This includes fermentation-based solutions, enzymes, microbial cultures, biostimulants, and biological crop protection. The approach improves environmental sustainability and economic performance while enhancing supply chain robustness in the face of global challenges.

Building more resilient food systems
The white paper notes that close partnerships between government, academia, and industry in Denmark have built a trusted framework for developing, testing, and scaling bio-based solutions. These efforts ensure strong food safety standards, while supporting the development of new protein sources and driving innovation.
Denmark became the first country to adopt a national action plan for plant-based foods in 2023, and launched a plant-based diplomacy initiative last year to inspire the EU to adopt sustainable food policies.
“Ingredients and biosolutions are at the heart of the green transition of agri-food systems,” said Lise Walbom, CEO of Food Nation. “By sharing Danish experiences and solutions, this white paper aims to inspire international collaboration and demonstrate how science-backed innovation can help build more resilient and sustainable food systems worldwide.”
