A Seoul court has sentenced main opposition People Power Party Rep. Kweon Seong-dong to two years in prison for accepting illicit political funds from the Unification Church.
The Seoul Central District Court issued the ruling Wednesday, finding Kweon guilty of accepting 100 million won, or around 70-thousand U.S. dollars, from the former second-in-command of the church, Yun Young-ho, in January 2022 in return for securing favors for the church.
The court also ordered Kweon to forfeit 100 million won.
The court said that by accepting illegal funds, Kweon had betrayed the public’s trust and breached his constitutional duty as a lawmaker to act with integrity and prioritize the national interest.
The special counsel team in charge of the case had requested a four-year sentence.
