NORWAY, Maine — A house fire in Norway Tuesday afternoon was caused by efforts to thaw frozen pipes, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

Norway firefighters responded around 3:49 p.m. to a reported structure fire on Everett Drive and found heavy fire conditions on arrival, officials said. Several neighboring departments assisted at the scene.

Fire marshal investigators determined the fire started during an effort to thaw frozen pipes using a combination of portable heaters and electrical heat tape. The blaze was ruled accidental, officials said.

The homeowners were just returning to the residence when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported.

The fire marshal’s office reminded residents that thawing frozen pipes can pose a serious fire risk if not done properly. Residents unsure how to safely thaw pipes are encouraged to contact a licensed plumber, officials said.
