Bear with me for a minute, and let’s consider a counter-narrative. For years and maybe even decades, the future of artificial intelligence (AI) has been framed as a countdown to an inevitable result. At some point, we are told, machines will cross a threshold and become “general” and capable of understanding across domains the way humans do. The moment is often imagined as a kind of cognitive sunrise or epiphany.

This counter-narrative deserves a closer look.

What if that moment never arrives? What if artificial general intelligence (AGI) is not delayed, but conceptually misframed? And, perhaps most curious to me, what if “general intelligence” is not a thing that can exist apart from a living and autobiographical mind?

The Patchwork Mind

We often think of intelligence as if it were a type of cognitive singularity. That’s a convenient construct, but it misses what a human mind actually is. Our mental life is layered, as perception, emotion, memory, language, social inference, and moral intuition are all woven together by a persistent self that carries experience forward through time.

What we call “general intelligence” may already be something of a narrative illusion. It’s not a single, all-purpose cognitive engine but a coherence we impose on a cluster of specialized systems, each with its own logic and constraints. In that sense, the human brain itself is modular.

What makes this modular system feel “general” isn’t the architecture alone but the presence of a self that binds these capacities into one lived story. They belong to the same “someone.” The unity of intelligence, in humans, is not computational. It is autobiographical.

Now, if this is true, then AGI may be a category error in the most basic (and profound) sense—like asking what color the number seven is. The question sounds meaningful, but it confuses things. We’re treating “general intelligence” as if it were a property of information processing, when what makes intelligence general for us is the coherence of a life. As much as reductionists might take haven in this fact, the brain is not a universal processor. It’s a biography that thinks.

Fluency Without Interiority

Large language models make this difference visible as they create coherence without biography. They generate answers without having lived the questions. From the outside, this can look uncannily like understanding. From the inside, there is nothing at all but for the cold hyperdimensionality of mathematics.

To me, it seems that many are drawn to the idea that enough complexity (or scaling) will eventually give rise to a point of view. Or perhaps, the right configuration of code and hardware can find its own spark of Genesis. It’s a deeply human hope and fear that’s been reinforced by centuries of stories about awakening machines. But if that threshold never comes, then we’re not left with an emerging mind but a shiny mirror that reflects the surface structure of thought without the interior life that once gave it depth.

The Human Adaptation Risk

If AGI is a myth, the risk shifts. The danger isn’t that machines will become too human. It’s that humans will begin to adapt themselves to something that never could exist in the first place. And then, the dominoes begin to fall as judgment is deferred, creativity is scaffolded by generative tools, and language arrives pre-formed and confident. The effort that once gave thoughts their psychological heft is quietly removed from the loop.

This is what I have described as anti-intelligence. It’s coherence without consequence, answers without the inner labor that once made them substantial. Developmentally, this matters. Frustration, humility, the capacity to wallow inside of uncertainty, the slow construction of thought that carries emotional and moral weight—these do not arise from access to information. They arise from wrestling with it.

Intelligence Without a Thinker

If general intelligence isn’t something that can be engineered, then what we are really confronting isn’t the birth of a new mind, but the externalization of our own. It’s not a new subject entering the world, but a vast cognitive environment full of answers that don’t have an owner.

In a world like this, human interiority becomes a scarce resource. And we may find ourselves surrounded by intelligence that doesn’t need a mind, while discovering, perhaps for the first time, why having one mattered.

For me, the most important question isn’t if machines will ever awaken. It may just be whether we can preserve the psychological conditions that make thinking something a person does, rather than something that is merely prompted into reality.
