I find it frustrating how people are so quick to blame Indonesia for this. This happened in Aceh, and because Aceh has special autonomy, the province makes its own rules rather than the central government (Indonesia).
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that implements Sharia law. For many years there was a large insurgency there calling for independence, and the conflict only subsided after the 2004 tsunami.
The only reason sharia law there is relatively restrained today is because Aceh remains part of Indonesia. It cannot implement what some would call “full sharia law” because that would violate Indonesia’s constitution.
So in reality, it is because of Indonesia that Aceh does not apply the death penalty for apostasy or punishment by stoning today.
