Miloš Medenica has been sentenced at first instance to 10 years in prison for forming a criminal organization, the continued criminal offense of smuggling, two criminal offenses of unlawful influence through aiding and abetting, as well as for obstruction of justice.

Officers of the Montenegrin Police Directorate have issued an international arrest warrant for Miloš Medenica, Police Directorate Director Lazar Šćepanović said.

Šćepanović told Television Vijesti that there is no precise information on whether Medenica is in Montenegro.

He stressed that Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić is not directly seeking his responsibility, and that he ordered an internal review to be conducted. He added that if he were to resign, organized crime would “launch fireworks from the Bemax building.”

According to Šćepanović, around one hundred locations were searched on Wednesday evening, and 150 police officers were deployed at the border.

“Officers of the Police Directorate managed to issue an international arrest warrant in less than 24 hours, and it is active at Interpol’s central bureau,” Šćepanović said.

He expressed hope that police officers, with the support of international partners, would arrest Medenica wherever he may be.

Medenica was sentenced on Wednesday at first instance to ten years and two months in prison, but police did not find him at his home address after the verdict was handed down.

Miloš Medenica and his mother, former President of the Supreme Court of Montenegro Vesna Medenica, were both sentenced at first instance to 10 years in prison.

He was convicted of forming a criminal organization, the continued criminal offense of smuggling, two criminal offenses of unlawful influence through aiding and abetting, as well as obstruction of justice.

Miloš Medenica was released from custody last October and placed under house arrest, as no indictment had been filed even three years after his arrest.
