Qantas A220 Debuts on International Route
QantasLink has introduced the Airbus A220 on the Brisbane to Wellington service, marking the aircraft’s first international deployment within the Qantas Group network.
The route operates up to three times weekly and replaces older aircraft types with a more fuel-efficient and passenger-friendly option. The A220 delivers up to 25 percent lower fuel burn per seat while also reducing noise levels for communities near airports.
The aircraft’s longer operational range also gives Qantas greater flexibility to expand routes as additional A220s enter service. The airline currently operates eleven A220 aircraft, with four more scheduled to join the fleet by mid-year as part of the group’s long-term fleet renewal plan involving more than 200 aircraft orders.

Cabin Layout and Passenger Experience
The QantasLink A220 carries 137 passengers across two cabins designed by David Caon.
Key cabin features include:
- 10 Business seats in a 2-2 configuration
- 127 Economy seats in a 2-3 layout
- Largest windows among single-aisle aircraft, creating a brighter cabin
- Fast, complimentary Wi-Fi access
- USB-A and USB-C charging ports across both cabins
- Personal device holders in all seats
- Wireless charging pads are available in Business Class
These upgrades improve onboard comfort while maintaining operational efficiency on medium-haul regional routes.
Fleet Renewal Strategy and Route Growth
The A220 forms a core part of Qantas Group’s fleet modernization program aimed at improving fuel efficiency, operational reliability, and passenger comfort.
According to QantasLink leadership, Brisbane serves as a strategic hub for trans Tasman and Pacific services. The A220’s size and operating economics make it suitable for routes where demand supports frequent service but does not require larger aircraft.

Benefits for Brisbane Communities
Brisbane Airport leadership highlighted that the A220 offers environmental and community advantages due to its lower noise footprint and improved fuel efficiency.
Quieter arrivals and departures reduce disruption for residents under flight paths while giving travelers access to a more modern aircraft.
Brisbane Honiara Service Expansion
Alongside the A220 deployment, Qantas also announced increased service between Brisbane and Honiara in the Solomon Islands.
From 29 March 2026, flights will increase from four to five weekly services using Embraer 190 aircraft. The expansion strengthens business and leisure connections between Australia and the Solomon Islands while reinforcing Brisbane’s role as a key regional gateway.

Qantas Reveals Economy Plus
Qantas introduces Economy Plus seating, offering extra legroom and priority benefits across domestic and regional routes starting February 2026. Bookings open immediately for eligible flights.
The new cabin option will operate on Boeing 737, Airbus A220, and Airbus A321XLR aircraft, later expanding to Airbus A330 services on selected international routes.
Qantas Economy Plus introduces up to 40 percent more legroom compared to standard Economy seats, alongside priority boarding and priority access to overhead baggage space. The product aims to improve comfort for both leisure and business travelers on short and medium-haul routes.
The first flights with Economy Plus begin on 6 February across Qantas’ domestic network and popular short-haul international destinations, including New Zealand, Bali, and Pacific Island routes.
Seat availability varies by aircraft type:
- Boeing 737 aircraft provides 48 Economy Plus seats in the forward and mid-cabin zones.
- Airbus A220 aircraft offer 20 Economy Plus seats.
- Airbus A321XLR aircraft include 36 Economy Plus seats in designated cabin areas.
From mid-2026, the product will expand to Airbus A330 aircraft serving Asian destinations, increasing availability across international services.
Complimentary Access for Frequent Flyers
Frequent Flyer members receive different levels of complimentary access depending on tier status.
- Platinum One and Platinum members receive complimentary Economy Plus seating at booking.
- Gold members receive access 24 hours before departure, subject to availability.
- Passengers on the same booking as eligible members also receive complimentary access.
Qantas states seating comfort remains a major factor for frequent flyers when selecting flights, making this product enhancement a strategic upgrade.

Forward Zone Seating Replaces Preferred Seats
Qantas is also introducing an expanded forward seating zone across much of its fleet. This section replaces previous preferred seating areas and offers faster aircraft exit and boarding convenience.
Forward zone seats remain complimentary for Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, and Silver frequent flyers when available.
Pricing and Booking Experience Updates
Economy Plus pricing varies based on route, aircraft type, and seat location, including front, main, and exit row options. Pricing applies in addition to ticket fares.
Qantas has updated its website and mobile app seat maps, allowing passengers to easily compare and select seating options during booking or after ticket purchase.
Cabin branding will help passengers identify Economy Plus areas, with branded headrests and overhead bin signage being installed progressively across aircraft.
Expansion Plans Across International Routes
The upcoming expansion to Airbus A330 aircraft marks the next phase of the rollout, enabling Economy Plus availability on longer regional routes across Asia.
This move positions Qantas to compete more effectively in markets where passengers increasingly expect upgraded Economy experiences without purchasing premium cabin tickets.
