I’ve seen the same situation posted about the AFD in Germany and reform in the UK. Same in France with the national front. An alliance of center right and left has no shared values beyond blocking the far right. The far right, despite how you feel about them, represents a large block of people democratically voting for them. If you keep ignoring them and not working with them it’s just going to continue radicalisation

If only US conservatives had this much integrity. They’d rather vote for a steaming pile of dog shit than the literal second coming of Jesus Christ if he had a (D) beside his name.

Woaw I am so surprised political pragmatism is still alive…what do people eat in Portugal?
Maybe it’s the experience of living under dictatorship perhaps…

Conservative personalities but not the actual conservative government (PSD).
They are a minority government whose only partner right now is Chega (the far-right party in Portugal).
So if they backed the other candidate, they would most definitely face backlash from Chega and risk having them reject anything they put to vote. Especially the new labour reform package they want (which is shitty and was not even included in their election program).
They put themselves in this awkward place by their own fault: they had originally refused to negotiate with Chega but once they saw the parliament had a right-wing majority, they threw their principles out of the window.

Reminds me a lot of the 2000 Presidential election in Romania. All the parties backed the socialist candidate Ion Iliescu to avoid the far-right ultranationalist nutjob Corneliu Vadim Tudor.
Iliescu did beat us up with miners but at least he didn’t threaten to shoot thousands in stadiums with machineguns…
Now I’m sure the Portguese left-wing candidate didn’t order ppl to get beaten up but its just a parallel I’m drawing between the 2

The Portuguese are smart. In Spain the right party is probably going to win the next elections and I’m sure they’ll form a coalition with the far right party 🙁

Why can’t we just fucking outlaw fascism? Like if a candidate like Trump refuses to accept defeat in an election or otherwise says things that make it clear he won’t support democracy, he is disqualified.

People understand now that it is the same bad actors in play that cause the problems and offer the “solution” just to gain power.

i have a buddy from lisbon who said everyone there is kinda shocked the right would do this. apparently the far-right candidate was polling way better than expected and they basically had to choose between party loyalty or keeping him out of office. wild to see conservatives teaming up with leftists just to block someone.

The far right is quite active and it is mostly supported by the kids of Portuguese that are foreign born and now moving back to Portugal. They are bringing the MAGA/IDU. Through the Chega party. This is encouraging for to see how savvy the local population are. 👏👏👏

Are there really countries where conservatives and far-right aren’t synonymous?
Seems more like a preference than a real difference wheter someone prefers one label over the other.
