Rochester, N.Y. — On the day she was slated to go on trial, a woman whose 7-year-old son was hit by and U-Haul truck and killed on the Fourth of July in 2024 reached a guilty plea.

Cyonna Badger was using public transportation to take her kids to visit their father for the holiday when her son Hakeem darted across West Ridge Road in Greece against a green light and was struck, according to police. He later died from his injuries.

Badger was later indicted by a grand jury on charges of criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.

Badger, now 28, pleaded guilty Monday to criminally negligent homicide and was placed on one year of interim probation. If that is successful, she will be able to withdraw her plea and instead plead guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and complete two more years of probation, according to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office. If the interim probation is unsuccessful, she could face up to five years of probation.

Another court date is scheduled for Friday.
