The largest attempts to illegally cross the border are usually recorded outside border crossing points, especially along sections where the border meets Romania and Moldova.
The spokesperson of the State Border Guard Service, Andriy Demchenko, spoke about this on a broadcast, without providing specific details – the information aims to raise general awareness of the border situation.
According to Demchenko, the majority of detentions fall exactly in the green belt of the border, i.e., outside the border crossing points, where criminals use forged documents or false departure conditions to cross the border outside the checkpoints.
Every day we detain violators, and for the most part along the green stretch of the border, i.e., outside border crossing points. Because, when talking about where it’s legally possible to cross the border, those are isolated cases of exposing those individuals who, using forged documents or falsifying the conditions of their departure, attempt to cross the border exactly at the checkpoints. We detain most of them outside the border crossing points.

The most frequent attempts have been recorded along the sections near Romania and Moldova, where criminals often use the services of intermediaries who offer ‘assistance’ in crossing the state border.
“The traditional areas where there are the most such attempts are the border with Romania and Moldova. The violators mostly use the services of people who promise to assist them in illegally crossing the border. In particular, when violators are driven to the border as close as possible, so that they can try to cross the state border on foot,” the spokesperson said.
Most frequent areas and risks
Regarding the risks of winter crossings through mountainous areas, Demchenko warns: the weather creates real threats to life and health, as low temperatures, frostbite, and hypothermia can lead to serious consequences.
Weather conditions are a major risk for people who choose routes through hard-to-reach mountainous areas, hoping they will not be detected there. Because low temperatures, frostbite, and hypothermia are a risk of dying when taking such reckless steps

The spokesperson also noted that the engineering arrangement of the Ukrainian border is undergoing radical changes: after the full-scale actions the approach to fortifying the border is shifting, focusing on engineering fortifications and maintaining the necessary means to counter armored vehicles and mass assaults in the future.
If before the full-scale invasion border engineering was primarily aimed at countering violators, preventing attempts to cross the border by people, and the movement of equipment, then military actions are a completely different matter from what we had before 2022. Our further strengthening of the border will include engineering fortifications of positions, maintaining the necessary means to strike armored vehicles, and counter any mass assaults that the enemy may attempt in the future, even if the situation changes dramatically

As was reported earlier, some cases of wrongdoing are also linked to financial inducement, but specific details are not disclosed. It remains important to comply with the laws and exercise caution when crossing the border.
