The national programme for the Malta Carnival 2026 has been officially unveiled by the Minister for Culture, Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with Festivals Malta.
The Carnival will take place between 13 and 17 February 2026, with the main celebrations held in Valletta and Floriana.
The annual event, one of Malta’s largest cultural celebrations, will see the participation of 39 companies, highlighting the continued relevance and popularity of the Carnival. A wide range of traditional activities is planned, including colourful parades featuring floats, dancers, masks, costumes and artistic installations in the capital city.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Bonnici described the Maltese Carnival as a key cultural event that brings communities together while strengthening national identity, creativity and tradition. He also announced that 50 local councils across Malta and Gozo will be organising additional Carnival activities in their localities, supported through funding from the Local Government Division.
Festivals Malta Chairman Aaron Zahra said the Carnival is the second major festival organised by the agency each year and presents a number of organisational challenges. However, he noted that it remains a central part of Festivals Malta’s portfolio as it celebrates one of the island’s oldest traditions while uniting Maltese and Gozitan families. He thanked all workers and volunteers for their contribution to the success of the event.
Chief Executive of Festivals Malta Frans Agius highlighted the Carnival’s international appeal, noting that it attracts thousands of visitors from Malta, Gozo and abroad every year. He praised the extensive behind-the-scenes work involved, from papier-mâché artistry and costume design to programming and logistics, much of which is carried out on a voluntary basis.
In addition to the main celebrations in Valletta between 13 and 17 February, the 2026 programme will also include a Carnival event in Ħamrun on Sunday 8 February, from 10am to 1pm, and “Carnival by Night” in Santa Venera on Saturday 7 February.
Artistic Director Jason Busuttil said this year’s Carnival will once again bring colour, creativity and joy to Valletta, Floriana and communities across Malta and Gozo. He noted that the artistic standard of floats, costumes and dances has continued to improve in recent years and encouraged the public to participate and enjoy the full programme of activities.
