Greek, Romanian Hamburg port workers arrested for trying to sabotage German warships

A Greek and a Romanian national have been arrested for allegedly attempting to sabotage German warships in the port of Hamburg, European authorities said Tuesday.

A statement from Eurojust, the European Union’s Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, said the arrests followed cooperation between German, Greek and Romanian authorities under the agency’s coordination.

The Romanian suspect was arrested in Hamburg, and the Greek in northeastern Greece. The suspects were only identified as employed at the port of Hamburg, and no motive was given for their alleged actions.

The Eurojust statement said the alleged attempted acts of sabotage took place in 2025, and included “dumping more than 20 kilograms of abrasive gravel into the engine block of German navy ships, puncturing the fresh water supply lines, removing fuel tank caps and [deactivating] electronic safety switches.”

“If gone undetected, the acts would have caused major damage to the ships and delayed their departure, endangering the operations of the German Navy,” Eurojust added.

It said the suspects’ homes in Germany, Greece and Romania were searched and evidence was seized.
