When student-athletes from across Georgia meet for the GHSA Swimming and Diving State Championship on Thursday, they’ll be joined by an adopted daughter of Bainbridge: Greta Zuccaro.

Zuccaro, from Italy, has been attending Bainbridge High School as part of the Pan Atlantic Foundation’s exchange student program. The standout swimmer — and 2028 Olympic hopeful — is headed to the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center after placing first in the 100-meter breaststroke, 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter freestyle, and 500-meter freestyle at the Colquitt County and Dean Farrell Invitational in December.

One of Zuccaro’s biggest supporters is Cynthia George, who placed Zuccaro and students like her with families across south Georgia and north Florida.

“She is quite the amazing athlete — she shows such devotion and dedication to swimming, a sport that she has been doing for most of her life,” George said in a Facebook post. “Her wonderful host family have been a great support system in continuing her disciplined regimen, taking her to practices and meets.”

While George may not be able to make it to Atlanta, Zuccaro will have no shortage of support. Her Bainbridge host family will be there, and her parents are flying in from Italy.

“We continue to make dreams come true for students like Greta when we open up our homes and our hearts to all the possibilities out there,” George’s post said. “This is what an exchange program can do for a student!”
