Malta police have arrested a 25-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man as part of an online fraud investigation that left around 200 victims with combined losses of approximately €1 million.

The arrests follow a wide-ranging probe by the Financial Crime Investigations Department into a scheme in which a local bank was allegedly impersonated online.

Police said the woman is believed to have played a central role in the operation within Malta.

According to investigators, the fraud targeted hundreds of individuals, with losses accumulating to about €1 million. The woman has been linked to an international criminal network, prompting coordinated action with Europol as well as authorities in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

As part of the Maltese operation, officers seized €8,000 in cash during a search of a residence in Paola. A separate search in Qrendi led to the confiscation of multiple mobile phones and other electronic devices believed to be connected to the case.

Parallel searches carried out by the Irish Garda also resulted in the seizure of several mobile phones and electronic equipment.

Police said inquiries are ongoing as investigations continue across multiple jurisdictions.
