This map (based on the 1897 census) colors each uyezd (district) by its largest plurality religious group. “Dominant” here does not mean an absolute majority (>50%)—it simply means the biggest group in that district.

Example: In Verkhneudinsk District (today around Ulan-Ude in Buryatia), Orthodox Christians are 47.9%, Buddhists 28.7%, and Old Believers 21.4%—so the district is shown as Orthodox even without a 50% majority.

    Franz Josef land in the artic wasn’t annexed until 1926 by the USSR. The Russian empire didn’t claim those islands in 1897. They did send a couple expeditions in the early 1900’s though. Besides no one lived there.

  2. Old believers are orthodox. Outside of not wanting anything to do with other religions, they are exactly Eastern Orthodox

  4. This is surely wrong. Even not counting roman catholics in that region, greek catholics were (and still are) a majority in most of galicia
