The General Workers’ Union has announced it will take industrial action in its ongoing dispute with Transport Malta, escalating a conflict over worker representation.
The GWU’s Maritime and Aviation Section stated that, despite dialogue and intervention by the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations, the workers’ demands continue to be ignored.
Section secretary Jurgen Azzopardi said the union remains committed to a fair solution but “cannot allow members’ rights and demands to be ignored.”
The union clarified that the dispute is not about pay or conditions, but concerns “the right of workers to choose who represents them freely.”
The GWU acknowledged the action may disrupt services and apologised for any inconvenience, calling the step “necessary” to protect members’ legal rights.
