Two of the better teams in the world in women’s hockey meet up in Milan on Thursday, as Canada takes on Finland in Group A action.

This game was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 5, but a Norovirus within the Finnish dressing room led to the game being postponed.

This year’s women’s tournament is one of the most highly anticipated events in recent memory. Not only because of the excitement of the United States taking on Canada, but also because of the introduction of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, players from all around the globe are showing their talents nightly.

Canada is unquestionably the most successful team in women’s hockey history, including at the Olympics. Despite falling to the U.S. in the inaugural tournament in 1998, the Canadians have won gold five times, making it to the championship game every time. This year’s team will have some pressure on it. Not only did the team lose to the Americans in the final of last year’s Women’s Worlds, but they were convincingly swept by its southern rivals in the Rivalry Series, marking six straight losses to the U.S. heading into the Olympics.

Outside of the U.S. and Canada, Finland has been the best women’s hockey nation. The country enters the Olympics having won each of the past two bronze medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, and has won bronze four times at the Olympics: 1998, 2010, 2018 and 2022.
