    >Takaichi is interested in “nurturing a very strong U.S. alliance, but also building Japan’s own defense capabilities as a hedge against the perception that America is no longer a reliable ally,” said Jeff Kingston, a professor of Asian studies and history at Temple University’s Japan campus.

  2. The LDP have only been out of power for what 4 or 5 years since 1958. Pretty incredible run.

  3. What are the PM’s ultravonservative views?

EDIT: because I genuinely don’t know not because I disagree

Why is Japan so anxious about immigration? Their population is aging and they arent replacing their population. I mean, I know it’s a pretty racist population in general, but it’s still seems like a weird number one issue.

  5. Imagine being labeled ultraconservative and still basically being far left compared to current U.S admin

  6. Given the push from the US and Taiwan, I believe she has everything to gain in the election. The support from the Japanese youths is unbelievable. The question is how large the margin will be.

  7. I wonder what her administration’s fiscal and monetary policy will be.

We’re already seeing the unwinding of the yen carry trade. An “ultraconservative” would probably try and lower interest rates to stimulate borrowing and spending, but at the same time, Japan’s economy + consumer habits aren’t the same as America’s. It’ll be interesting to see how her admin navigates this.

  8. As anti-immigration as she is, I bet she has some mad blinders on for the likes of Pewdiepie, etc

She wrote a blurb recommending a book called “Hitler’s Election Strategy” back in 1994. As a Japanese I fucking hate this timeline.

  10. Hard to blame them. I’d probably want an increased focus on militarization if I was staring down Chinese authoritarian aggression
