KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Calling all Swifties! Especially those who like to pick up a book now and then.
A Kansas City-area professor has published a book highlighting one of the world’s biggest pop stars and other women’s influence on the economy.
‘Swiftynomics: How Women Mastermind and Redefine Our Economy’ came out in late January 2026. The author, Misty L. Heggeness, has a background in economics and research, which helped drive this project. Her curiosity during the COVID-19 pandemic fueled her.

“I, along with many other women, were struggling to balance the needs of our paid jobs with family care,” said Heggeness.
She began to take a deeper dive into Swift’s career.
“I did some background research on women in history, and I did some background research on the women that Taylor sings about in her songs,” said Heggeness.
She found a connection between those who Taylor wrote about and the singer’s success.

Misty allowed Kansas City to shine throughout her book.
“There’s a lot of local references that I think that local folks will really appreciate,” said Heggeness.

After all, it is the place where Taylor’s ‘Love Story’ with Travis Kelce began.
“It’s just been a fun experience to see how local shops have been adapting to their relationship and bringing in new merch, and there’s a lot of small businesses who are also developing merchandise and things to sell related to Taylor and Travis, and it’s fun to see,” said Heggeness.
Heggeness’s passion for Swift started long before her book’s release. She has taught ‘The Economics of Taylor Swift’ at the University of Kansas for years.
“We get a lot of diversity in the class, and students seem to really, really, enjoy it,” said Heggeness.
Right here in Kansas City, readers have options of stores where they can get their hands on a unique version of the book.
Rainy Day Books in Kansas City and Monarch Books & Gifts in Overland Park both have signed copies.
Heggeness will be going on tour later this year, with multiple stops in Kansas City. Those interested can learn more at her website.
