North Korean media have reported that the ruling Workers’ Party will convene its congress in late February in Pyongyang.

State-run Korean Central Television reported on Sunday that the country’s leader Kim Jong Un attended a meeting of the party’s political bureau the day before where the decision about the congress was made.

The congress is considered the party’s supreme organ. It was last held in January 2021.

A detailed schedule and agenda for the congress have not been disclosed, but it is expected to last for several days.

North Korea is likely to hold a military parade to coincide with the congress. Sources say arrangements are underway to invite delegates from friendly countries.

North Korea has indicated that at the congress it will present a new initiative to strengthen its nuclear war deterrence.

International attention is focused on what will be discussed at the congress regarding nuclear and missile development and diplomacy with the United States.
