To any observer of Serbia’s European Union integration, January 30 brought some very mixed signals.
That Friday, the first meeting was held of a new Serbian government body tasked with accelerating the country’s EU accession.
Simultaneously, President Aleksandar Vucic signed into law a series of legislative amendments that the opposition, civil society, legal experts and the EU itself have all warned will significantly undermine the independence of the judiciary – a key issue when it comes to negotiations on joining the EU.
