Russia struck a high-voltage power substation in Novovolynsk, Volyn region, on Monday, Feb. 9, hitting an energy facility just five kilometers (three miles) from the border with Poland.

According to a Telegram post by Borys Karpus, the mayor of Novovolynsk, the substation sustained significant damage and was temporarily taken out of service. Emergency crews were working at the site of the explosions, he said.

More than 80,000 subscribers in the Novovolynsk community and surrounding settlements were left without electricity following the strike, Karpus said, adding that critical infrastructure in the city is being powered by generators. Energy workers are attempting to restore supply by rerouting electricity through other substations.
