[OC] French Bulldogs is the most popular dog breed in the US, and Cane Corsos are having a meteoric rise. Any surprises?

Are Cane Corso’s replacing pit breeds as a way to avoid breed restrictions, or did I miss something regarding their increased popularity?

Those are not beginner dogs, and there is one in my neighborhood that has to be muzzled and restrained by two people sometimes on walks because that particular dog wants to kill every other dog it sees. It’s terrifying.

Curious to know what’s driving that sharp rise in popularity.

Eta: all those poor French bulldogs 😢I hope they start allowing better breed standards that let those poor dogs breath.

  2. I’m surprised whippet makes the list (barely). I’m not American, but I had a whippet growing up and I always have to explain to people what it is (like a smaller greyhound is my go to).

I am surprised that a breed with major health issues is the most popular dog. I can hear them wheezing from a mile away on walks.

  4. Since the source is AKC (which only counts purebreds), we don’t get mutts, or even deliberately mixed breeds like labradoodles, so the picture here is somewhat skewed.

EDIT: Something like 40% of all shelter dogs have some pit bull in them.

  5. Surprised that border collies aren’t all that high; in Europe they’re among the most common breeds.

  6. As a veterinarian doing CTs and MRIs I see french bulldogs all the time – but I guess I’d see them all the time even if they were the 50º most popular breed.

  7. French Bulldogs?

Since 2014 breeding rules have gotten strict in The Netherlands effectively banning the breeding of flat nosed French Bulldogs because of the many health issues associated with it. Now they’re trying to breed healthier bulldogs.

Flat nosed French Bulldogs are the result of human animal abuse. I fear many are among them in that rising graph.

Maybe Cane Corsos are becoming so popular because of all the negative publicity surrounding Pit Bulls, XL Bullies, and such like. Lots of people seem to want a “hard” dog, for reasons that I will never understand, and Cane Corsos have been relatively unknown outside Italy so they don’t get the same bad press (yet) and you don’t get judged in the same way by your friends and family (yet).

[This article from *The Guardian*](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/feb/19/the-rise-of-the-cane-corso-should-this-popular-status-dog-be-banned-in-the-uk) describes the Cane Corso as “like an XL Bully on steroids”.

What’s the deal with weimaraners dropping in popularity? They’re pretty much the same thing as a Vizsla in a different coat and slightly bigger, but the Vs stayed constant and Ws dropped off.

  10. The Lab has been dethroned!?!?  I guess I’ll have to go throw a ball with mine to commiserate with her.

  11. Any surprises? Yeah, where are the greyhounds? You telling me greyhounds are rarer than Portuguese water dogs? Also the lines are a little bit of a mess, it looks like akitas turn into whippets.

Eta: this data makes a lot more sense being only AKC registered dogs. Racing greyhounds are mostly registered through the NGA. Other breeds also have specific national registries outside of the Club.

Cane Corso at 14 is frightening. They’re bigger, stronger, and even more difficult to train than pitbulls. A pitbull atleast is small enough to be stopped by most adults if there’s an incident, but good luck stopping a 120lb cane corso

I’m glad to see huskys declining in popularity. They’re a beautiful dog and a lot of people think they want one but really don’t have a lifestyle that suits a working dog

  14. You know, last week I was perusing the local animal shelter list of available dogs for adoption and wondered ‘what’s up with all the Cane Corso’s?”

They weren’t anywhere near as common as pit bull mixes (maybe 80% of all the dogs available) but I was surprised to see any in the shelter. I thought they were rare in the US.

  15. Shit news, sadly. French Bulldogs are deformed, suffering creatures popularized as status symbols for shallow fucks. And Cane Corso are giant slobbering killers that substitute for having an adequate peen. Buy a lab or golden retriever, or something small enough to not be psycho if you can’t walk it ten miles a day.

  16. God help us on stupid dog trends. One who is so overbred that they can barely breathe and the other a future vector for many dog attacks.

  17. I’m surprised Great Pyrenees aren’t on here. They seem to be everywhere, just in the last ten years or so.

  18. Just wanted to say good job on your colour scheming here. Similar tones but not identical. ❤️❤️❤️

  19. I’m very surprised that one of the ugliest dog breeds and objectively one of the dog breeds with the worst health due to poor breeding standards is #1. Why is anyone getting a French Bulldog?

  20. I don’t understand the hype of French bulldogs. They aren’t cute as most other dogs and have health issues.

It is sad how many people support irresponsible breeding that creates animals with breathing problems just because wealthy white women think ugly smushed faces are cute.

Surprised to see Border Collies and Aussies aren’t higher. I see a lot in Southern California, though part of me wonders if that’s skewed because they need so much exercise that of course you see them out and about the most.

Anyone old enough to remember the Doberman craze is really nervous about the idea of his local wannabe tough guy choosing between a puppy-mill Cane Corso and a puppy-mill Belgian Malinio.

  24. The AKC data source is hiding the fact that “mutt” is *by far* the most popular “breed” (i.e. non-purebred).

  25. Too many people getting a Cane Corso that have no business with a dog that is intelligent and very powerful. I have come across too many that are not trained and socialized properly.

  26. I’m glad huskys popularity fell. Sure, they are the coolest dog ever! But they need to be outside, not in a small apartment.

  27. This is crazy. They can’t breed without help. They are a breed that Darwinism is screaming for us to stop forcing into existence.

Not that would show up here . . . there is a major problem with pit bulls. Every time I look at shelter animals 90% of them are Pits. Every time there is an animal attack . . . also pits.

  28. My a-hole neighbors had a cane corso that they didn’t train at all and didn’t pay any attention to ever, just left her outside to bark for hours on end. I took them to animal court over it and they moved that huge dog in the house with them, never walked her, she was always getting out and terrorizing the neighborhood…those dogs are absolutely not for anyone, really. I can’t believe people are seriously getting these dogs thinking that they are a pet.

  29. I’m surprised about Boxers. I’ve never had one and am not particularly partial to them, but anyone I’ve ever known that had one swears it’s the best dog in the world.
