The Civil Protection Department (CPD) has issued a red weather warning, for Thursday as strong to very strong winds are expected until Friday morning.

The highest alert level warning remains in effect until 6am on Friday and will be renewed as needed.

People are also urged to stay away from shorelines, breakwaters, and coastal zones due to hazardous sea conditions and high waves.

Loose objects outdoors should be secured, whilst driving should be done cautiously, especially in open, exposed areas where sudden crosswinds may occur.

A few weeks ago Malta and Gozo were hit by Storm Harry, which caused damage in expose areas particularly close to the coast.

In relation to the warning, the OHSA appeals for continued caution when carrying out outdoor works, particularly on construction sites. Work close to the sea should be avoided. The Authority also reminds that weather conditions of this kind may cause damage to workplaces. Therefore, the necessary inspections should be carried out by Project Supervisors and Health and Safety professionals, so that any damage that could create a risk is addressed immediately and the health and safety of all workers is safeguarded.

The Authority takes this opportunity to remind stakeholders of health and safety precautions at the workplace:

Avoid outdoor work at heights or near unstable structures.

Avoid work on roofs, scaffolding, or elevated walkways.

Secure or remove all loose materials, tools, equipment, and temporary structures.

Ensure signage and site communications reflect current conditions.

Maintain clear emergency access at all times.

Exercise caution near trees, power lines, and temporary structures.

Advise workers to plan travel carefully, allow extra time, and stay alert for debris or falling objects near car parks and entry points.

Tower cranes must be left free to slew when unattended and must not have suspended loads.
