So the US needs to swoop in and save Peru, from China, by claiming it’s sovereignty first?

Peruvian here.
Most Peruvians are happy and believe their future is tied with China’s. The whole project is HUGE which will include a railroad to the east coast of Brazil across the Amazon. It’s probably one of the biggest railway project in the few decades
And as always, when the US complained, we told them “bring some money and do it too” but of course that doesn’t work for the US

This’d have a bigger impact if the US wasn’t constantly threatening to take over other countries.
I don’t even think they’re wrong to warn about China controlling so much infrastructure, but it’s not like it’s safer partnering up with the US rather than with China. At least China’s president doesn’t go on late night benders insulting you in front of the whole world whilst *they* screw you over.

It’s absolutely crazy how drastically my response to this has changed in 2 years. Two years ago I would have thought this meant there was some crazy intel behind the scenes showing that China was about to drastically change their foreign policy.
Now my response is more along the lines of “Uh oh, grandpa and his friends are off their meds again”.

Yes, Peru signed up for the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Moreover, China built and operates Peru’s Chancay Port, a key deep-water sea port and gateway to the Asian and Chinese markets. China’s economic and geopolitical influence have risen dramatically in Peru and the rest of Latin America. If the U.S. wants to win this competition for economic and geopolitical influence in Latin America, the Trump Administration needs to stop hurling insults and threats and devise a strategy to effectively counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative! The U.S. needs to promote trade and investment in Peru and the rest of Latin America!

No doubt China must love Trump at this point.
He has alienated all the USA’s allies, pushing them further to China, while simultaneously making its adversaries also push closer to China. Throughout all this tariff nonsense, China’s trade surplus has actually significantly GROWN.
Think of Canada as a prime example…
Canada has been a steadfast and reliable ally. When the USA put 100% tariffs on Chinese cars, Canada followed suit as a good ally. It was mutually beneficial as both countries have a large domestic automobile manufacturing program. Trump then went on a tirade actively stating he wants to destroy Canada’s auto manufacturing industry and bring all those jobs to the USA… why would Canada continue to tariff Chinese cars if the USA is trying to destroy Canada’s auto manufacturing?!?! It makes no sense… of course Canada is going to remove those tariffs on Chinese cars. Trump is a total fool.

China builds Peru ports. The US interferes in its politics to promote right wingers.
Somehow this is called “losing sovereignty to China.”
