While hockey has been a staple at the Winter Games since its inception over 100 years ago, this will be just the sixth time NHLers will compete in the tournament, and the first since 2014. With the mix of top-tier talent and European regulars, there is a lot of excitement heading into this year’s tournament.
Both teams had inauspicious starts to their journey in Italy, though the two had different results.
In the first game of the men’s tournament, Finland dominated the play against Slovakia. However, the Finns struggled to put the puck in the back of the net. Along with Slovakia’s Juraj Slakfkovsky having a great performance, Finland ended up losing 4-1.
Sweden might have come away with victory over Italy on Wednesday, but it almost did not happen. Tre Kronor surrendered the first goal of the game, and only led by one heading into the third period. Yet, the team managed to pull out a 5-2 win against the host nation, breathing a sigh of relief afterward.
