Scotland will go up against fellow World Cup 2026 qualifiers Switzerland in the 2026-27 Nations League.

Steve Clarke’s side discovered who they will face in Group B1 during Thursday’s draw, with Scotland handed a Euro 2024 rematch with the Swiss and paired with Slovenia and North Macedonia.

The Tartan Army are gearing up for a first World Cup in 28 years this summer, but the Nations League could provide a safety net for their Euro 2028 qualifiers.

While unlikely Scotland will require the play-off as co-hosts of the tournament alongside England, Wales and Ireland, if any of the four fail to qualify could gain one of two host nations spots reserved by UEFA.

It would require more than two of the host nations to miss out on the top two in their regular groups for the Nations League route to come into play.

Northern Ireland – who are no longer co-hosts after Casement Park was withdrawn as a Euro 2028 venue – have no such host nation protection and therefore are more likely to need the Nations League as a fall-back.

England face a rematch with their Euro 2024 final conquerors Spain in their Nations League group, as well as clashes with Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group A3.

Wales have been placed in Group A4 alongside Nations League holders Portugal, plus Denmark – who Scotland defeated to qualify for this summer’s World Cup – and Norway.

The Republic of Ireland were drawn to face Israel, Austria and Kosovo in B3 while Northern Ireland will be up against Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia in B2.

The Nations League group matches will be played in the autumn, with four ties set to be played in a window running between late September and early October, and the final two in November.

The quarter-finals and promotion-relegation play-offs will be played in March 2027, with the final four to battle it out in the Nations League finals in June.
